Small Compost Bin Ideas - Mini Compost Bins

Are you at a point in your life where you'd like to start composting, but you happen to live in such a small space that you just don't think it's possible at the moment? Then you'll be happy to know that you can easily start making your own compost in a small compost bin, or what some people like to refer to as mini compost bins. Let's have a look at some of the small compost bin ideas below and hopefully you can come up with a way to start making your own compost...even if you you do find yourself stuck in a small space.

Storage Tote Compost Bin

There are a variety of ways you can make compost and many everyday containers found around the average home would make a suitable small compost bin. One good idea is to use an old plastic storage tote as your compost bin. You'll want to drill holes all around the plastic storage container so the compost bin gets plenty of aeration and can drain freely. Then just set it out wherever you have room and start adding your composting materials. You can easily hide small compost bins behind trash cans or even a shrub. Just be sure not to forget it's there.

Garbage Can Compost Bin

A garbage can compost bin is a great idea to recycle your old plastic garbage can when it comes time to upgrade to a new garbage can for storing your trash. They are easy to build and don't require any complicated power tools to make. And by hiding your old garbage can compost bin behind your new garbage can, nobody will be the wiser.

Maintaining Your Small Compost Bin

As with any compost bin you decide to use, you'll need to make sure the compost doesn't get too wet or all you will end up with is one big smelly mess. If your compost bin should start to smell, mix in thoroughly some dry materials like leaves or shredded cardboard to help the compost bin air out and continue turning every few days. The idea is to get the compost moisture levels back to normal as quickly as possible to help get rid of the smell. Also, make sure that when you add any kitchen scraps to your small compost bin that you also add enough carbon rich materials so your compost doesn't start smelling bad in the first place.
