Selecting a Compost Bin

If you find that your compost pile is growing by leaps and bounds, it may be time to upgrade to a compost bin to keep your compost contained and a bit more tidy. You can build a homemade compost bin or purchase a commercial compost bin. The ultimate decision is yours really, depending on your financial resources and available time to build your own. You'll find that building your own compost bin gives you the option to match your personalized bin with your surrounding architecture. Whereas a commercial bin is usually plastic and sometimes hard to blend in to certain areas.

If you so choose to purchase your compost bin the first thing you should examine is the quality of the compost bin. Is the material thick enough to withstand the elements and last through several years of composting activity? Are the fasteners galvanized or stainless to prevent premature rusting? If the compost bin should be empty for any amount of time, is it heavy enough that it won't blow away in the first wind storm? You don't want to be dragging your compost bin back through and out of your neighbor's yard after a mid-summer thunder shower.
